Blu Kouzina – Greek Kouzine That Leaves You Wanting More

Located on a hill at Dempsey, Blu Kouzina boasts of the best Greek food served in Singapore. Jeremy, being an ex-auditor obviously did his due diligence before bringing me over. I used to think Greek food in Singapore is a disappointment because I’ve tasted authentic ones in Athens and Santorini. But this restaurant visit changed my mind.

The restaurant was decked in white and blue and that’s common for most Greek-related places as it is symbolic of the Greece colour. One would be greeted by shelves of food, spices and condiments imported from Greece for sale at the entrance of the restaurant. If you like to experiment with food, try using some of their condiments or sauces! (Definitely not my thing but probably Jeremy’s!)

Jeremy and I ordered the grilled octopus, the meat platter and the dessert platter.

Grilled Octopus

Both of us agree that the octopus done the Greek way is the best in this restaurant thus far compared to those eaten in other Greek eateries. The chef managed to grill the octopus in a way that leaves the skin crisp with a smoky flavour while not affecting the tenderness of the flesh. Although the entire octopus is drenched in their renowned extra virgin olive oil, the dish does not taste disgustingly oily. In fact, it tasted really good with all the herbs mixed together. Unlike other grilled octopus which are usually chewy and a tad hard, the one we tasted at Blu Kouzina was really soft and succulent. In particular I like the taste of the layer in between the flesh of the octopus and the outer skin. I googled but I couldn’t find out what it is called. Jeremy gives it a double thumbs up!!!

The meat platter came with 2 lamb meatballs, 1 beef kalamazoo, 1 organic chicken skewer and 2 lamp chops paired with fries and a cucumber yoghurt dip. I’m a person who cannot tahan the lamb’s taste (yang shao wei) although I know some people eat lambs for that particular taste. I am hence very particular with my lamb. The lamb chops served was not fully cooked, a little more to the raw side. I think that allows the flesh to be softer. The lamb was soft and juicy but i still did not like that the yang shao wei is still there. Jeremy did not have any issue with the taste though so i think it really depends on your tolerance level for the ‘lamb taste’. He did however complain that there were small bones in the lamb so just be careful when you’re having this dish. I quite like the herb taste of the meatballs although Jeremy thinks they are okay only. The beef and chicken were both tough and dry so we didn’t really enjoy them.

Meat Platter

This is me talking about a month after dining there, that I’d go back to this place just for the dessert platter. Priced at a super reasonable rate of $22, you get to try 3 different types of traditional authentic Greek desert with fruits at the side. The desserts when served to us were warm and fresh. We tried the Bougatsa first. The Bougatsa contains a custard-like cream called semolina cream and it is my favourite dessert that beckons me back to the restaurant for more. The warm and crisp skin coupled with the warm custard/kaya-like filling was a good combination. The Baklava is a philo pastry filled with crushed walnuts, topped with homemade syrup. I am not a fan of walnut but I thought the dessert was cooked pretty well and I like the texture of it in my mouth. The pastry was crisp and thin. Lastly, we had the Kataifi Roll which is a new dish to me. I really love how the pistachio nuts were being placed in this dessert dish. Priced at only $22, you get to try 3 different types of authentic Greek dessert. It is super worth it!!

Dessert Platter

All in all, after visiting quite a number of Greek restaurants in Singapore, I would say the food here indeed deserves boasting to be the best. Ambience is not too bad especially if you want to take your date for a walk along the lighted paths of Dempsey at night. It can be pretty romantic!
